The 8th Marcin Antczak Award for the most inspiring ornithological papers published in 2021 in a peer-reviewed journal by young scientist who originates from Poland, the Czech Republic or Slovakia goes to dr Jan Jedlikowski from Faculty of Biology, Biological and Chemical Research Centre, University of Warsaw.
The International Board of Marcin Antczak Award appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology of Adam Mickiewicz University decided that the most inspiring ornithological papers of the last year are:

Awarded papers by Jan Jedlikowski and co-authors described different signalling behaviour and territorial interactions in two Rallidae species. He showed that Water Rail, a usually highly aggressive species, utilized purely vocal signalling while rarely approaching rivals and thus avoided direct actions when territorial boundaries were already established. In contrast, Little Crake used not only vocal signals but approached rivals regularly and thus relied primarily on direct actions in territorial disputes. In another paper, they showed that both Rallidae species that live in the same area clearly distinguished each other calls from those of conspecifics and those of other sympatric and phylogenetically related species. In one of the last papers, Jedlikowski also showed that both species adjusted their territorial response according to the status of heterospecific intruders, as Water Rail was less aggressive towards neighbouring Little Crakes than strangers and vice versa.
Jan Jedlikowski defended his PhD in 2016 at the University of Warsaw (Poland). He was awarded by the Rector of Warsaw University for an outstanding doctoral dissertation. His interests and research focus mainly on the breeding and behavioural ecology of poorly known Rallidae species and was funded, inter alia, by National Science Centre, Poland. Jedlikowski has authored / co-authored 20 articles in internationally-acknowledged peer-reviewed journals and books. He has also participated in or consulted Rallidae research projects in Japan, South Africa and the USA. Last years, he started focusing more on the vocal behaviour of rails, trying to find out the structure and function of simple duets in Water Rail and Little Crake, but also from a more general perspective, the vocal evolution in the whole Rallidae family.
Initially, the International Board of Marcin Antczak Award screened over five hundreds of papers and after initial selection considered 15 persons and their articles published last year. The process took over three months and at the end we had considered (in addition to awarded dr Jan Jedlikowski) we would like to distinguish Petr Mikula from Charles University (Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, Prague) and Jaroslav Koleček from Czech Academy of Sciences (Institute of Vertebrate Biology, Brno) and Charles University (Institute of Environmental Studies, Prague) for the following papers:
