THE 6TH MARCIN ANTCZAK AWARD for the most inspiring ornithological papers published in 2019 in a peer-reviewed journal by young scientist who originates from Poland, the Czech Republic or Slovakia goes to dr KATERINA SAM from the Institute of Entomology, Biology Center Academy of Science of the Czech Republic, and Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science at the University of South Bohemia.
The International Board of Marcin Antczak Award appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology of Adam Mickiewicz University decided that the most inspiring ornithological papers of the last
year are:

and food resources matter. Journal of Biogeography 46: 279–290.
Anna Mrazova, Katerina Sam. 2019. Exogenous application of methyl jasmonate to Ficus hahliana attracts predators of insects along an altitudinal gradient in Papua New Guinea. Journal of Tropical
Ecology 35: 157–164.
In awarded papers, Katerina Sam deals with ecology of bird communities and their impact on food-webs. Further, she focuses on tri-trophic interactions and communication of plants, insect and birds via volatile compounds, both in temperate and tropical areas. In her recent research, Katerina Sam analysed (i) the impact of habitat complexity and forest structure on species richness and abundance, (ii) how plant hormones attract insectivorous birds to plants and (iii) how the top-down and bottom-up forces between plants, insect and birds interact. Further, her research contributed for example to research of gene flow in the Müllerian mimicry ring of poisonous Pitohui birds or avian malaria in Papua New Guinea. Many of her papers are influential and obtained more than 1000 citations.
Katerina Sam received PhD degree in 2013 from the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic). Her thesis concerns trophic relationships between insectivorous birds and insect and predation in tropical forests. Her work was conducted under supervision of Vojtech Novotny. After obtaining her doctorate, she joined the team of Roger Kitching and Nigel Stork at Brisbane University (Australia). She also received postdoctoral grants from Grant Agency of Czech Republic. They allowed her to continue research in Papua New Guinea, where she currently leads also a national-wide bird survey. She established Laboratory of Multitrophic Interaction at Biology Centre of Czech Academy of Sciences in 2017. She (co)-authored more than 43 peer-reviewed papers published in journals like Ecography, Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology, Ecology, Journal of Biogeography, Science, Scientific Reports, Molecular Ecology, or Current Opinions in Insect Science. Finally, she popularizes science and collaborates for example with Netflix of Czech TV.
Initially, the International Board of Marcin Antczak Award screened over four hundreds of papers and after initial selection considered 23 persons and their articles published last year. The process took over four months and at the end we had considered (in addition to awarded dr Katerina Sam) we would like to distinguish the following nominated papers and persons:
