THE 7TH MARCIN ANTCZAK AWARD for the most inspiring ornithological papers published in 2020 in a peer-reviewed journal by young scientist who originates from Poland, the Czech Republic or Slovakia goes to dr PAWEŁ MIRSKI from the University of Białystok and Estonian University of Life Sciences (Tartu).
The International Board of Marcin Antczak Award appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology of Adam Mickiewicz University decided that the most inspiring ornithological papers of the last
year are:

Awarded papers by Paweł Mirski and co-authors link birds of prey movement and landscape. He showed space use by Lesser Spotted Eagle was influenced by sex, climate and local, landscape patterns. In macroscale, landscape heterogeneity was found an important predictor of this raptor space use and showed that in the least and most diverse landscapes, home ranges are the smallest, thus considered beneficial. In another paper, together with Estonian colleagues, they show that Lesser Spotted Eagle space use in fine-scale is associated with configurational and compositional heterogeneity, thus movement of this generalist predator can be used to indicate valuable, heterogeneous sites in farmland. In the last paper, Mirski shows how high tree cover density, despite anthropogenic disturbance attracts dietary specialist such as Honey Buzzard to nest and forage in urban forest.
Paweł Mirski defended his PhD in 2017 at the University of Białystok (Poland). Afterwards, he was granted by Estonian Research Council with a two-year postdoc project, which he have carried out at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Currently he works at both mentioned universities and is active in the field of nature conservation as vice president of Eagle Conservation Committee. Mirski was twice granted with National Geographic Society grants and currently serves National Geographic as an reviewer in Early Carrier Grants. He have authored / co-authored 33 articles in internationally-acknowledged peer-reviewed journals and few national and European action plans for spotted eagles. Last years, he started few parallel movement ecology studies on different bird of prey species in which he studies their migratory behavior, but also use multispecies raptor movement data to indicate hotspots of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes.
Initially, the International Board of Marcin Antczak Award screened over four hundreds of papers and after initial selection considered 18 persons and their articles published last year. The process took over four months and at the end we had considered (in addition to awarded dr Paweł Mirski) we would like to distinguish the following nominated papers and persons:
