The 2nd Marcin Antczak Award for the most inspiring ornithological paper published in 2015 in a peer-reviewed journal by young who originates from Poland, the Czech Republic or Slovakia goes to
Dr Jiří Reif
fromCharles University in Prague, Institute for Environmental Studies

The International Board of Marcin Antczak Award decided that the most inspiring ornithological paper of the last year is:

Jiří Reif, Martin Jiran, Radka Reifova, Jana Vokurkova, Paweł T. Dolata, Adam Petrusek, Tereza Petruskova 2015. Interspecific territoriality in two songbird species: potential role of song convergence in male aggressive interactions. Animal Behaviour 104: 131-136.

This is an example of excellent study on difficult species in which authors documented strong interspecific territoriality between two nightingale species under a robust experimental design. Moreover, the study has very interesting ecological and evolutionary inspiration. Jiří Reif is first and corresponding author of awarded paper. Click here for Polish Press Agency info.

Jiří Reif received PhD degree in zoology from the Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic). His thesis concerns the effects of habitat on patterns of bird distribution and abundance in space and time. After obtaining his doctorate in 2008, he gained experience as a post-doctoral researcher during the stays at Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris (France), Johannes Guttenberg Universität in Mainz (Germany) and Daphne, a non-governmental organization in Prague. In 2010 he obtained a position at the Institute for Environmental Studies at Charles University in Prague, where he now works as an associate professor. Jiří has authored or co-authored more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals and serves also as a scientific advisor in citizen science projects in Czech Society for Ornithology, BirdLife partner in the Czech Republic. His research focuses on drivers of changes in bird abundance over space and time and also on ecological aspects of speciation in birds. He studies this latter topic using a model system of nightingales (Luscinia sp.) within a team led by his wife Radka Reifová.
Initially, the International Board of Marcin Antczak Award screened a few hundreds of papers and after initial selection considered seven persons and articles published last year. The process took over four months and at the end we had considered (in addition to awarded dr Jiří Reif) we would like to distinguish the following nominated papers and persons:

We would like to congratulate all the nominees for the Award and the distinguished person.
The award ceremony along with award-person lecture and a special session was held on 5th October 2016 at Faculty of Biology, Adam Mickiewicz University.

On behalf of the Board,
